Chennai: Keys to Success – Hard Work and Resilience, Says Praggnanandhaa’s Mother After Historic Triumph
In a remarkable display of talent and determination, Indian Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has made headlines with his recent victory at the Norway Chess 2026 tournament. Following this historic achievement, his mother, Nagalakshmi, shared her insights on the essential ingredients for success in both sports and academics: hard work, resilience, and a genuine enjoyment of the journey.
Speaking to PTI Videos, Nagalakshmi emphasized that an excessive focus on results can overshadow the effort put into the game. “If one enjoys the process and continues to work hard despite setbacks, success will eventually follow,” she stated, highlighting her supportive role at home while acknowledging the expertise of Praggnanandhaa’s coaches and support staff.
Praggnanandhaa’s triumph has solidified his position among the elite in chess, with fellow Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay declaring him India’s strongest player, surpassing reigning world champion D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi. Following the 15-day tournament, Praggnanandhaa is now focused on improving his live ratings in the International Chess Federation rankings.
Nagalakshmi also shed light on her daughter, Grandmaster R Vaishali, who is currently competing in the FIDE Women’s Championship in Japan. She noted that Vaishali’s long-term goal is to prepare for the World Championship title over the next six months. Dismissing any notions of sibling rivalry, Nagalakshmi emphasized the strong support the siblings provide each other in all aspects of life.
Reflecting on their journey, she spoke of the profound influence of five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, who first met Praggnanandhaa when he was in Class 1 at Velammal School. Anand continues to inspire both siblings, with Vaishali currently training at his academy.
The family’s journey into competitive chess began with a parental decision to limit television time during childhood. Vaishali was enrolled in chess, drawing, and yoga classes, which ultimately led to Praggnanandhaa taking up the game by observing his sister practice at home. This nurturing environment has propelled both siblings to the highest echelons of international chess.
As Praggnanandhaa continues to rise in the chess world, his mother’s words resonate: success is not merely about the destination, but the dedication and joy found along the way.
