Julio Catalino Sadorra shines as Philippines stuns Slovenia in FIDE Chess Olympiad

Julio Catalino Sadorra, a Filipino Grandmaster based in the United States, has been making waves at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary. Despite his busy schedule and looming responsibilities back home, Sadorra has been giving his all in every game, knowing that his time with the national team may be limited.

In a stunning upset, Sadorra secured a 2.5-1.5 victory over super GM Vladimir Fedoseev of Slovenia, propelling the Philippines to a share of seventh place after five rounds. His remarkable win has been hailed as one of the biggest triumphs in recent Philippine chess history, showcasing the resiliency and fighting spirit that Filipinos are known for.

Sadorra’s aggressive gameplay and tactical brilliance turned the tide of what seemed like a losing position into a winning one, leaving his opponent scrambling to defend. His performance, along with draws from GM Danuel Quizon and International Masters Pau Bersamina and Jem Garcia, secured a sensational win for the Filipino team.

With eight match points each, the Filipinos are now tied with 22 other nations at No. 7, just two points behind the leaders. Their journey to the Olympiad has been made possible through the support of the Philippine Sports Commission and other sponsors.

Meanwhile, the Filipinas faced a tough loss against Italy, with Shania Mae Mendoza’s impressive run coming to an end after a defeat to IM Marina Brunello. Despite the setback, the team remains determined to bounce back in the upcoming rounds.

As the competition heats up, all eyes are on Sadorra and the rest of the Philippine team as they gear up to face the formidable Armenians in the next round. With their fighting spirit and determination, the Filipinos are poised to continue making waves in the world of chess.
