Community Connects Through Chess: IATC Chess Club Thrives in Flint

FLINT, Mich. — In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the IATC Chess Club has become a vibrant hub for players of all ages, uniting youth and adults every week through the timeless game of chess. Hosted by the Inside Acceleration Tutoring Center, this free program is not just about the game; it’s about fostering intellectual growth and building connections across generations.

Founded by Esha Wooten-Brown, the club emerged from a desire to fill a void in Flint’s local offerings. Recognizing that the nearest chess club was over 30 minutes away, Wooten-Brown envisioned a space where everyone could gather to learn and play. “When you travel to other states, you see chess embedded into the community,” she noted. “Flint deserves that same opportunity.”

The club welcomes players from all walks of life, whether they are seasoned strategists or curious beginners. “Our chess club is intentionally open to all ages and skill levels,” Wooten-Brown explained. Attendance varies each week, with participants ranging from as young as 7 to as experienced as 52. “That’s part of what makes the space so special.”

In response to feedback, the club recently shifted its sessions from Fridays to Saturdays, accommodating the needs of adult participants. “The love for chess truly spans generations,” Wooten-Brown said, emphasizing the inclusive atmosphere that defines the club.

First-time visitors can expect a warm welcome in a pressure-free environment. “There’s no intimidation here,” Wooten-Brown reassured. “Most importantly, there is a chess board and a place waiting just for you.” Sessions blend teacher-guided instruction, casual play, and even speed chess, all set to the soothing backdrop of classical music.

For beginners, Wooten-Brown emphasizes that chess is about more than just winning. “It’s about learning how to think. Mistakes are not failures; they’re part of the learning process.” She hopes the club helps young people recognize their potential, stating, “If even one young person walks away believing they are smarter, stronger, and more capable because of chess, then this club has done exactly what it was meant to do.”

However, sustaining this free program comes with challenges. Wooten-Brown highlighted the need for ongoing community support, including volunteers, chess sets, and instructional materials. “We’re always in need of help with advertising and outreach so more families and community members know the club exists,” she said.

The IATC Chess Club is located at 3098 N Center Rd in Flint. For more information about the club and other programs offered by Inside Acceleration Tutoring Center, visit insideacceleration.com.

As the chess pieces move across the board, so too does the spirit of community in Flint, proving that sometimes, the best connections are made one move at a time.
