Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu — At just 15 years old, Sabarinathan Iyyappan is not only a rising star in the chess world but also a testament to resilience and determination. Hailing from a humble background in Nagapattinam district, Sabarinathan faced a pivotal moment when he considered stepping away from chess due to financial constraints. “I told my father that chess was costing us too much and that I could stop. He said, ‘Play as long as I am alive. You can think about stopping after that,’” Sabarinathan recalled.

This unwavering support from his father, Iyyappan, a construction laborer earning a meager income of Rs. 600 to 700 a day, has fueled Sabarinathan’s passion for the game. Despite the financial burden of tournament fees, travel, and coaching, Iyyappan has prioritized his son’s chess journey, even when it meant sacrificing his own earnings.

Sabarinathan’s journey into chess began when his younger brother introduced him to the game. However, due to limited resources, only Sabarinathan could pursue competitive chess. “We could not both travel for tournaments. It was difficult at home, so only one of us could continue,” he explained.

With a FIDE rating of 1476 in classical chess and 1450 in rapid chess, Sabarinathan has competed in various tournaments across Tamil Nadu and even participated in an international FIDE-rated event in Assam. Yet, each tournament requires careful financial planning, often leading to tough decisions about which events he can attend.

The financial strain extended to his training as well. Before receiving assistance, Sabarinathan trained on his father’s old touchscreen phone, which often failed during crucial moments. “During one online event, I was in contention to finish first when the connection failed. I eventually finished third,” he shared.

However, a turning point came when Mohamed Ashik, who runs the Instagram page “A Broke College Kid,” highlighted Sabarinathan’s story. This exposure led to the donation of an iPad, a chessboard, and coaching from Balamurugan, significantly enhancing Sabarinathan’s training experience. “Now, I can complete coaching sessions without worrying about a weak connection,” he said.

Recently, Sabarinathan had the opportunity to meet his idol, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, at the Chennai Grand Masters. This experience not only inspired him but also provided a glimpse into the world of elite chess.

Despite the newfound support, Sabarinathan and his father remain acutely aware that sustainable success requires more than just a single moment of assistance. They are appealing to the Tamil Nadu government and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) for ongoing support, including coaching, tournament fees, and travel expenses.

“I want chess and education for him together. If there is a school that can support both, that is all I ask. I do not want anything else,” Iyyappan expressed, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to Sabarinathan’s future.

As Sabarinathan continues to navigate the challenges of pursuing his chess dreams, his story serves as a reminder of the power of community support and the importance of providing opportunities for young talent. With the right resources, Sabarinathan believes he can achieve his dream of becoming a Grandmaster, and perhaps even a world champion.
