Mumbai, India — Grandmaster Iniyan P showcased an extraordinary display of skill and strategy at the Global Chess Festival, clinching the Masters title on Friday. The 24-year-old reigning national champion, who entered the tournament as the top seed, delivered a commanding performance, finishing with an impressive 7.5 points and remaining unbeaten throughout the competition.

Iniyan, representing Erode, had virtually secured the championship before the final round, allowing him to agree to a quick draw with Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy. This strategic decision not only confirmed his victory but also earned him a winner’s cheque of Rs 8 lakh in his debut at the prestigious event.

In the Masters category, Russia’s Boris Savchenko finished in second place with 6.5 points after sharing the point with Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi in the final round.

The festival also celebrated remarkable achievements in other sections. Nithin Babu triumphed in the Challenger Category, defeating Ashirwad Swain in a tense match on the top board. Nithin, who started as the sixth seed, was rewarded with a trophy and Rs 3 lakh, while earlier leader Viresh Sharnarthi, who had won his first six games, slipped to 10th place after suffering defeats in the last two rounds.

In the Junior Master Category, 13-year-old Madhvendra Pratap Sharma claimed the title, finishing with eight points after settling for a short draw against A Amanlal in the final round. His victory not only earned him Rs 2 lakh but also a direct entry into the Masters Category for next year’s tournament, which is recognized as the world’s richest prize-money chess event for children.

Balananda Ayyappan secured second place in the Junior Masters with 7.5 points, while Amanlal edged out Aahna Gulati and Eeshwar Veerappan Aiyappan on tie-breaks to claim third position, with all three players finishing on seven points.
