Excitement Builds as Global Chess League Season 4 Draft Unveils Star-Studded Teams

Bengaluru, India — The player draft for Season 4 of the Global Chess League (GCL) ignited a wave of excitement on Monday, showcasing the intense competition and strategic maneuvering that defines this franchise-based chess tournament. With the event set to take place in Bengaluru from September 3 to 13, the stakes have never been higher as some of the world’s top chess talents prepare to battle it out on the board.

Among the standout moments of the draft was the fierce bidding war for Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin. The 22-year-old prodigy, who was named MVP in Season 2 and has qualified for the upcoming Esports World Cup, became the headline pick after being signed by the American Gambits. This team, already bolstered by the presence of 2026 Candidates champion Javokhir Sindarov, has assembled a youthful and dynamic squad that also includes talents like Daniil Dubov, Sara Khadem, Bibisara Assaubayeva, and Marc’Andria Maurizzi.

Defending champions, the APL Pipers, made headlines by retaining the legendary Magnus Carlsen, while also adding Women’s Chess World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh and Indian stalwart Koneru Humpy to their roster. The team aims to fortify their title defense with the addition of Vidit Gujrathi and reigning World Rapid champion Volodar Murzin, creating a formidable lineup.

In a historic move, Indian chess icon Viswanathan Anand switched teams for the first time in GCL history, joining the PBG Alaskan Knights alongside rising star Arjun Erigaisi. The franchise also welcomed young Turkish talent Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus and Nino Batsiashvili, further enhancing their competitive edge.

Meanwhile, the Ganges Grandmasters made a significant splash by signing Ian Nepomniachtchi and bringing back Levon Aronian after a two-season hiatus. The Triveni Continental Kings retained the talented Alireza Firouzja and strengthened their squad with Aravindh Chithambaram and Pranav Venkatesh. The Mumba Masters opted to keep their successful core intact, ensuring continuity as they prepare for the upcoming season.

As the teams finalize their rosters, anticipation builds for what promises to be an exhilarating season of chess. With a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging stars, the Global Chess League is set to captivate audiences and showcase the brilliance of the game.
