Those participating in the 7-day schedule of the Open are a third of the way through this prestigious event, showcasing some of the best chess talent in the nation.
Today marks a pivotal moment with Rounds 4 and 5 of both the Invitationals and the 7-day Open. Additionally, the 5-day schedule of the Open kicks off today, with Round 1 starting at 3 p.m.
Weeramantry Blitz Tournament
Before the main events commenced, the 7th Annual Weeramantry Blitz Tournament saw an impressive turnout of 216 state champions. The tournament format featured four double-rounds of blitz chess, with a time control of three minutes per game and a two-second increment from move one.
The Weeramantry is unique in that players are grouped by rating range rather than age or gender, allowing for unexpected matchups and thrilling upsets. In the Championship section, FM Stephen Willy from Washington and CM Sharath Radhakrishnan from Ohio tied for first place with 7/8 scores, with Willy taking the title on tiebreaks.
In other sections, Julian Joseph from Texas dominated the 1800-2099 category with a score of 7½/8, while Blake Cos Bentley from Vermont triumphed in the 1500-1799 section with a score of 7/8.
Irwin Tournament Highlights
In the Irwin, GM Jesse Kraai from Maryland stands out as the only grandmaster among four players with perfect 3/3 scores. He is joined by three FMs: Julio Morella, Robby Adamson, and Steven Van Enk. The competition is heating up, with a full point separating the leaders from a group of 15 players trailing behind.
Denker and Haring Updates
The Denker tournament has seen surprising performances, with FM Stephen Willy and Nathaniel Des Ruisseau from West Virginia both holding perfect 3/3 scores. Des Ruisseau, rated 1934, has made headlines with his upsets against higher-rated opponents.
