Historic Chess Showdown: Gukesh and Vaishali Set to Compete for World Titles

NEW DELHI: On Thursday, India awoke to a momentous announcement that has sent ripples of excitement through the chess community. For the first time in history, two of the nation’s brightest young talents—19-year-old Dommaraju Gukesh and 24-year-old Vaishali Rameshbabu—are set to compete in their respective World Chess Championship matches. This unprecedented event offers India a simultaneous opportunity to crown two world champions in the intricate game of chess.

Gukesh, already a reigning champion, will face off against Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov. Sindarov earned his spot in this high-stakes match by winning the Candidates Tournament with an impressive unbeaten streak, finishing with a score of 10 out of 14 points. Meanwhile, Vaishali secured her place in the spotlight by clinching the Women’s Candidates title, setting the stage for a showdown against five-time world champion Ju Wenjun from China.

As anticipation builds, chess enthusiasts are eager to know where these historic matches will take place. According to sources at FIDE, the international chess federation, the process of selecting the host city is set to commence soon. A tender inviting bids for hosting the matches is expected to be published in May.

“FIDE will soon open the bids for hosting the matches. The announcement will be published on the FIDE website and sent to all national federations,” a FIDE official stated. The tender will outline essential details, including event duration, budget requirements, prize funds, and organizational regulations.

While private companies or consortiums may express interest in hosting these prestigious matches, FIDE mandates that all bids must be submitted through the national federation. The evaluation process will be thorough, with the FIDE General Strategy Commission assessing applications before the FIDE Council approves the final host city.

In terms of scheduling, the World Championship match is slated for the November-December 2026 window, while the women’s match is provisionally set for spring 2027. This timeline mirrors the previous championship cycle, where the FIDE Women’s World Chess Championship was held in China in April 2025, while Gukesh faced Ding Liren in the World Championship match later that year.

Interestingly, FIDE is also considering the possibility of hosting both championship matches simultaneously. This option remains on the table, contingent on the level of interest generated by the Women’s World Championship in terms of bids and sponsorship. If a host city or consortium recognizes the potential of a double-header featuring both the open and women’s titles, the world could witness Gukesh and Vaishali vying for their crowns under the same roof.

As the chess world gears up for this historic showdown, all eyes will be on these two prodigies as they aim to etch their names in the annals of chess history. The excitement is palpable, and the stakes have never been higher for Indian chess.
