Freedom Holding Acquires ChessBase: A New Era for Chess Software

In a landmark move for the chess community, Kazakh-based investment and technology company Freedom Holding has officially acquired ChessBase, the leading name in chess software and professional training tools for over three decades. The acquisition, confirmed in a press release on Thursday, includes a significant investment of €5 million ($5.9 million) aimed at modernizing the Hamburg-based company and integrating cutting-edge artificial intelligence into its offerings.

Timur Turlov, CEO of Freedom Holding, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “ChessBase is an exceptionally strong brand with a rich history and, arguably, one of the most important projects for the global chess community.” He emphasized that this partnership would not only bolster ChessBase’s standing among professional players but also provide access to Freedom Holding’s extensive client base of over 11 million across more than 20 countries.

The announcement follows a week of speculation after German chess journalist Conrad Schormann reported on his blog, Perlen von Bodensee, that an agreement had been reached. At that time, ChessBase had refrained from commenting publicly.

Founded in 1986 by Frederic Friedel and Matthias Wullenweber, ChessBase has revolutionized chess preparation with its innovative software, which includes searchable databases and analytical tools. The company boasts a database of over 10 million games, making it an essential resource for both club players and elite grandmasters. Notably, chess legend Garry Kasparov was among the first to incorporate ChessBase into his training regimen.

Freedom Holding has assured that ChessBase will continue to operate from its Hamburg headquarters, with no job cuts planned. The existing leadership team, including managing director Rainer Woisin, will remain in place. Woisin remarked, “This is great news for the chess world. Having an investor who genuinely loves chess is perhaps the best outcome imaginable.”

Despite the optimism surrounding the acquisition, questions linger about ChessBase’s long-term future, particularly regarding software development and potential changes in leadership structure.

Freedom Holding’s growing involvement in the chess world is evident, with the company allocating over $15 million annually to chess-related initiatives. Recent sponsorships include major FIDE events such as the FIDE World Chess Championship 2023 and the upcoming FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championship 2024. Just last week, Freedom Holding was announced as FIDE’s official partner for its 2026 chess development program.

Timur Turlov, a 38-year-old chess enthusiast and billionaire with an estimated net worth of $6.9 billion, has been a prominent figure in the chess community. After renouncing his previous citizenships to become a citizen of Kazakhstan in 2022, he has served as the President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation since 2023 and founded the International School Chess Federation (ISCF) in 2024.

However, Freedom Holding has faced scrutiny regarding its business practices. In 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission launched investigations into the company, following allegations of compliance issues and potential misconduct. Freedom Holding has denied these claims, citing an independent investigation that found no wrongdoing.

In a related note, ChessBase India, which operates as a separate entity, will not be affected by the acquisition. Founder IM Sagar Shah expressed gratitude for ChessBase’s support and reassured that the deal would not alter their operations.

As the chess community anticipates the changes that this acquisition may bring, one thing is clear: the future of ChessBase under Freedom Holding could usher in a new era of innovation and accessibility for chess enthusiasts worldwide.
