Chennai Super Kings Part Ways with Head Coach Stephen Fleming After 17-Year Tenure

Chennai, July 13, 2026 — In a significant shift for the franchise, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have announced the mutual parting of ways with head coach Stephen Fleming after an illustrious 17-year partnership. The five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions made the announcement on Monday, marking the end of one of the most successful coaching tenures in the league’s history.

In a statement released by the franchise, CSK expressed their gratitude towards Fleming, stating, “The Super Kings and Stephen Fleming have decided to mutually part ways, bringing to a close one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League.” The decision came after a series of open discussions between Fleming and the CSK management, emphasizing a respectful and amicable conclusion to their collaboration.

Fleming’s journey with CSK began in 2008 when he joined as a player under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. After a commendable debut season where the team finished as runners-up, he transitioned to the role of head coach ahead of the 2009 season. This marked the beginning of a remarkable era, during which CSK secured five IPL titles and two Champions League trophies, solidifying Fleming’s status as the most decorated coach in IPL history.

Reflecting on his time with the franchise, Fleming expressed heartfelt sentiments: “Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved.” He added, “Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will be cheering the team on for years to come.”

CSK owner Rupa Gurunath praised Fleming’s contributions, stating, “Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence.” Under Fleming’s guidance, CSK consistently qualified for the playoffs, achieving this feat in 11 of his 17 seasons at the helm.

However, the last two seasons have been challenging for the franchise. Following their title triumph in 2023, CSK faced a downturn, finishing at the bottom of the standings in 2025 and failing to qualify for the playoffs for a third consecutive season in 2026.

As the franchise embarks on a new chapter, the legacy of Stephen Fleming will undoubtedly remain a cornerstone of CSK’s rich history. Fans and players alike will remember his contributions as they look forward to the future of the team.
