Las Vegas International Chess Festival: A Grand Showcase of Strategy and Skill

Las Vegas, NV — In a city where every moment is an event, the Las Vegas International Chess Festival has become a highlight of the summer chess calendar. From June 10 to 14, the Westgate Las Vegas Resort transformed into a chess lover’s paradise, hosting the prestigious National Open alongside a myriad of exciting side events.

Dubbed the “chess vacation of the year,” this festival offered players a feast of rapid and blitz tournaments, including the renowned Walter Browne Memorial Blitz Tournament. Attendees were treated to game analyses by Grandmaster Kayden Troff and a thrilling simultaneous exhibition by Grandmaster Ben Finegold, who dazzled the crowd with his strategic prowess.

A Competitive Main Event

The National Open attracted 112 players in the Open section, with over 1,000 more competing in various other categories. The competition was fierce, culminating in a three-way tie for first place, with Grandmasters Christopher Yoo, Arman Mikaelyan, and International Master Liam Putnam each finishing with a score of 7 out of 9. Each co-champion walked away with $5,834, but it was Putnam who claimed the Edmondson Cup on tiebreaks, remaining undefeated throughout the tournament.

Putnam’s final-round victory over GM Ehsan Ghaemmaghami showcased his skill and determination, narrowly missing out on a Grandmaster norm. Meanwhile, Mikaelyan’s impressive win against IM Oleksii Bilych highlighted the dangers of a double-fianchetto setup, proving that even unconventional openings can lead to swift victories.

Rising Stars Shine Bright

Among the standout performances was WGM Zoey Tang, who achieved the best win of her career by defeating one of the co-champions in Round 2. Despite her remarkable performance, Tang missed out on an International Master norm due to technicalities regarding player federations. “The journey to 2400 continues,” she remarked, looking forward to her next challenge at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.

Texas’s FM Elbert Fang, however, did secure his IM norm with a notable victory against IM Alice Lee, solidifying his place among the rising stars of chess.

Women’s and Youth Championships

The festival also featured the U.S. Women’s Open, where WIM Davaakhuu Munkhzul and WFM Norovsambuu Badamkhand shared top honors with impressive scores of 4½ out of 5, each earning $1,150. Their thrilling matches captivated the audience, showcasing the depth of talent in women’s chess.

In the International Youth Championship, California’s Pranav Rajesh triumphed in the Under-14 Premier section, while Ryan Guanchen Yu and Neil Zion Joseph tied for first in the Under-9 Premier section. Clark Liu also shone in the Youth Trophy Tournament, winning the Premier section with a score of 4½ out of 5.

Blitz and Beyond

Yoo not only excelled in the main event but also clinched victory in the Walter Browne Memorial Blitz, scoring 10 out of 12 and taking home the $1,000 top prize.

As the festival wrapped up, participants and spectators alike left with memories of intense competition and camaraderie. For those eager for more chess action, the festival’s official website offers daily bulletins and game analyses, ensuring that the excitement of the Las Vegas International Chess Festival continues long after the pieces have been put away.
