Iniyan Pa Crowned Champion at Global Chess Festival in Mumbai
Mumbai, India – In a stunning display of skill and strategy, Iniyan Pa of Tamil Nadu, the top seed, emerged victorious in the Masters Category of the Global Chess Festival, held at the World Trade Centre. The 24-year-old national champion dominated the tournament, finishing with an impressive 7.5 points and securing a winner’s purse of Rs 8 lakh.
With the title within reach after the penultimate round, Iniyan opted for a quick draw against Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy, solidifying his championship status in his debut appearance at this prestigious event. His unbeaten run included three draws, showcasing his tactical prowess throughout the competition.
Iniyan’s victory was not the only highlight of the festival. Nithin Babu clinched the title in the Challenger Category, while 13-year-old Madhvendra Pratap Sharma triumphed in the Junior Master Category. Both Nithin and Madhvendra have earned direct qualification to compete in the Masters Category for the upcoming 10th season next year.
Nithin Babu, seeded sixth, faced off against Ashirwad Swain in a gripping battle on the top board of the Challenger section. After a series of intense matches, Nithin emerged victorious, taking home Rs 3 lakh and a trophy. Meanwhile, Madhvendra, the top seed in his category, secured his title with a draw against A. Amanlal, finishing with 8 points and earning Rs 2 lakh.
The Junior Masters category saw Balananda Ayyappan finish second with 7.5 points, while Amanlal edged out Aahna Gulati and Eeshwar Veerappan Aiyappan for third place after a tie-break.
The atmosphere was electric during the top board clash between Nithin Babu and Swain, both vying for the championship. Nithin’s aggressive strategy paid off as he maintained the upper hand, ultimately forcing Swain to resign on the 32nd turn.
