Enfield Town Schools Partnership Hosts Inaugural Chess Tournament
Enfield, UK – The Enfield Town Schools Partnership (ETSP) made history last Friday by hosting its inaugural chess tournament at Suffolks Primary School, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of 65 young competitors from seven local primary schools. The event, held on September 19, 2026, was a celebration of strategy, skill, and community spirit.
Organized in collaboration with Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC), the tournament aimed to introduce competitive chess to beginners and developing players. Participants were required to know the basic movements of the chess pieces but faced no minimum proficiency requirements, making the event accessible to all.
Local MP Feryal Clark attended the tournament, engaging with students and even taking a moment to play a quick game herself. “I am incredibly impressed with the ETSP Chess Tournament and the number of children taking part,” Clark remarked. “It was great to see our young children concentrating and exercising their minds. I hope to see more children from schools across Enfield taking part in this exciting tournament next year.”
Each school entered teams of up to ten players, and every competitor played six games throughout the morning. After a series of intense matches, St George’s Primary School emerged victorious, claiming the title of ETSP Chess Tournament Champions 2026.
Andrea Cassius, headteacher at Suffolks Primary School, expressed her delight at hosting the event. “We were thrilled to welcome so many young players from across our schools. The enthusiasm, concentration, and sportsmanship shown throughout the morning were fantastic to see,” she said. “Chess develops critical thinking, resilience, and problem-solving skills, and this event provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils to experience competition in a supportive and inclusive environment.”
In recognition of their participation, every student received a small goody bag, celebrating their commitment and effort throughout the tournament.
As the event concluded, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement and camaraderie, setting a promising precedent for future competitions. The ETSP Chess Tournament not only showcased the talents of young players but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration among schools in Enfield.
With plans already in motion for next year’s tournament, the ETSP hopes to inspire even more children to take part in the strategic world of chess, nurturing a new generation of thinkers and problem solvers.
