Magnus Carlsen Faces Upset as Arjun Erigaisi Triumphs at FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships

Arjun Erigaisi Stuns Magnus Carlsen at FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships

In a thrilling display of chess prowess, India’s Arjun Erigaisi delivered a significant upset against world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen during the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships in Hong Kong on Thursday. This match marked another setback for Carlsen, who has recently struggled against India’s rising grandmasters, having faced consecutive defeats to R Praggnanandhaa just weeks prior at Norway Chess.

Representing Team MGD1, Erigaisi showcased his skills in Round 6, defeating the Norwegian champion in just 30 moves. The game commenced with a Reti Opening, transitioning into the Three Knights Variation of the Queen’s Gambit Declined. Both players faced pressure throughout the match, with inaccuracies creeping into their play.

At one point, it seemed Erigaisi had handed Carlsen an opportunity with a misplaced rook move (26…Rd8), but the reigning champion failed to capitalize. The decisive moment came just four moves later when Carlsen blundered his rook, allowing Erigaisi to seize control of the board. A critical queen capture on f3 (Qxf3) left Carlsen with no viable defense, forcing him to resign.

Time management played a crucial role in the match’s outcome. While Erigaisi had nearly a minute left on his clock, Carlsen was down to just 12 seconds, adding to the pressure during the game’s critical moments.

This victory was pivotal for Team MGD1, which edged out WR Chess with a final score of 3.5-2.5. Aryan Abhijeet Shah also contributed to the team’s success with a win over Wadim Rosenstein, while WR Chess managed only one victory, courtesy of Fabiano Caruana against Abhimanyu Puranik.

After six rounds, Team MGD1 sits in second place with 13 points, trailing the leaders, Dragon Chilling, led by former world champion Ding Liren of China. In contrast, WR Chess finds itself in 12th place with 10 points.

Carlsen entered the tournament as the reigning world champion in both rapid and blitz formats, while Erigaisi continues to solidify his status among the elite, having claimed bronze medals in both formats at last year’s World Championships in Doha. This latest result underscores the rising influence of India’s new generation of grandmasters, with Erigaisi joining the ranks of Indian players who have recently challenged the world’s top-ranked player on major stages.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on how Carlsen rebounds from this setback and whether Erigaisi can maintain his momentum against other formidable opponents.
