Midrand Juniors Classical Chess Tournament Kicks Off Annual Development Calendar
Midrand, January 31 – The Midrand Chess Club launched its annual junior development calendar with a triumphant start at the Midrand Juniors Classical Chess Tournament, held at Halfway House Primary School. The event attracted 47 young chess enthusiasts, showcasing both development and junior sections in a competitive and engaging atmosphere.
In the development section, Arkan Khalife emerged victorious, while Teboho Ntseare was honored as the Best Female Player. The juniors section saw a nail-biting finish, with Alexander Greyling narrowly defeating Khalife on tie-breaks to claim the top spot. Maria Mabuza was recognized as the Best Female Player in her category.
Coach Kgosimang Molefe expressed his satisfaction with the tournament’s success, highlighting the excellent participation and smooth organization. “It provided a high-quality, rated, classical platform for juniors, while strengthening community involvement and development pathways,” he said. The tournament was marked by intense competition, with standout moments including the fierce spirit displayed by players and the close finishes that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
The tournament also served as a vital introduction for many younger and newer players to their first classical, rated experience, particularly in the development section. Molefe emphasized the importance of this exposure for fostering long-term growth in chess. “Structured, affordable, classical tournaments are working. More learners are entering competitive chess, gaining ratings, and building confidence,” he noted.
Community support was palpable, with volunteers and members of the Save A Boy Child initiative playing crucial roles in the event’s setup and coordination. Sponsorship from the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, along with Score Energy, ensured that resources and operational costs were covered, making the event accessible to all participants.
Looking ahead, Molefe encouraged more players and sponsors to join the initiative, with the next tournament scheduled for February 28. For those interested in sponsorship opportunities or participation, Molefe can be contacted at 073 494 3478 or via email at kgosi@midrandchess.co.za.
