Koneru Humpy Set to Shine at Norway Chess Women’s Tournament: A Return to High-Level Competition
Indian Chess Grandmaster Koneru Humpy Set to Return to Norway Chess Women’s Tournament
Indian chess grandmaster Koneru Humpy has confirmed her participation in this year’s Norway Chess Women’s tournament, expressing her excitement for the high-level competition and the event’s impeccable organization. A former challenger for the Women’s World Championship title, Humpy is celebrated as one of the most accomplished female players of her generation.
Koneru made history in 2002 at the age of 15, becoming the first Indian woman to earn the Grandmaster title and the youngest female grandmaster in history. Her remarkable journey in chess has been marked by numerous accolades and milestones, solidifying her status in the global chess arena.
“I am really happy to be part of Norway Chess Women. It is a tournament I have always enjoyed, not only because of the high level of competition but also the warm atmosphere and excellent organisation,” Humpy stated in a press release. “I am looking forward to playing in Oslo and competing against some of the world’s strongest players.”
A Storied Career
Koneru’s ascent in the chess world continued in 2007 when she became only the second woman ever to surpass the 2600 Elo rating mark, a significant achievement that underscored her elite status.
Recent Triumphs and Future Ambitions
In recent years, Humpy has remained a formidable presence in the chess community. She is a two-time Women’s World Rapid Champion, having clinched titles in 2019 and 2024. Her impressive performance at the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup, where she finished as the runner-up, secured her qualification for the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament, keeping her aspirations for the world title alive.
A Welcome Return
Benedicte Westre Skog, COO of Norway Chess, expressed enthusiasm for Humpy’s return to Oslo. “Humpy has been at the very top for a long time, and that says a lot. Very few players manage to stay at that level while still pushing for the biggest titles year after year. She adds real strength to the field, and we’re very happy to welcome her back to Norway Chess Women,” Skog remarked.
Pioneering Gender Equality in Chess
Launched in 2024, Norway Chess Women is the world’s first fully equal super tournament for women in chess, held concurrently with the main Norway Chess event. The tournament features the same format, number of players, playing conditions, and prize fund as the open event, setting a new standard for gender equality in professional chess.
Now entering its third edition, Norway Chess Women has quickly established itself as one of the most prestigious platforms for elite women’s chess, uniting the world’s strongest female players in a highly competitive and internationally visible setting.
As anticipation builds for the tournament, Humpy’s return promises to elevate the competition and inspire a new generation of chess enthusiasts.
