Aravindh Chithambaram: A Journey of Patience and Perseverance in Chess with the Support of His Mother Deivanai
Title: Aravindh Chithambaram: A Journey of Patience and Triumph in Chess
NEW DELHI: In a world where instant gratification often overshadows perseverance, 26-year-old Aravindh Chithambaram stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. The Grandmaster from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, recently made headlines by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the 2026 Esports Chess World Cup, set to take place in Paris from August 11 to August 15. His journey, marked by countless attempts and unwavering determination, exemplifies the age-old adage: “Patience is the key.”
After months of near misses in various tournaments, including Titled Tuesdays and elite online events, Aravindh finally broke through at DreamHack Atlanta earlier this week. “I’ve been trying for many months to qualify through other tournaments,” he shared with a smile in an exclusive interview with Times of India.
Ticket to the Esports World Cup 2026
Representing S8UL, one of India’s leading Esports organizations, Aravindh is now gearing up for the Last Chance Qualifier, where he will compete for one of two coveted spots in the Group Stage of the main event. “I’m really happy that I qualified for the Esports World Cup,” he said. “Winning the tournament, that’s an ethereal feeling. A lot of strong players took part in that event.”
Despite securing his spot in the main event, Aravindh remains grounded. “I haven’t completely qualified for the group stage. I need to play one more play-in to be in the group stage, so I’m looking forward to it. I see it as just one step. Of course, it’s still a long way to go, but I’m happy that I made my first step,” he explained.
A Grandfather’s Lesson
Aravindh’s love for chess began under extraordinary circumstances. At just three years old, he faced the tragic loss of his father, leaving his mother, Deivanai, to raise him alone. “I started chess at the age of eight,” he recalled. “I asked my grandpa to join me for a game of cricket, and he told me, ‘No, I cannot even walk. Maybe I will teach you a game of chess.’ And that’s how I got into chess.”
What began as a clever diversion from cricket soon transformed into a lifelong passion.
Family Support: The Backbone of Success
Aravindh’s journey was not without challenges. His mother, Deivanai, worked tirelessly as an LIC agent, becoming the sole breadwinner of the family. Yet, her unwavering belief in her son’s talent allowed him to pursue chess professionally. “I’m still… I cannot believe that my mom made such a bold decision by letting me do this,” Aravindh acknowledged. “Most parents would push their children towards academics, but she believed in me.”
The financial burden of raising a child while supporting a competitive sport like chess is daunting, but Aravindh’s family provided a nurturing environment that shielded him from the harsh realities of life. “My family has been a great support. After I lost my father, I lived with my grandparents and my mom. I didn’t feel like I was missing anything because they were always there for me,” he reflected.
Mentorship and Growth
With a supportive family behind him, Aravindh quickly rose through the ranks of chess. He began competing in local tournaments and found early mentors who helped shape his skills. “I gradually started playing in district tournaments and found a coach there. My first coach was Prasad from Madurai, and later, I joined Grandmaster RB Ramesh’s academy in Chennai, which was a turning point for me,” he said.
Ramesh not only trained Aravindh but also helped him secure sponsorships for international events. “He has supported me throughout my journey,” Aravindh noted. Under Ramesh’s guidance, Aravindh earned his Grandmaster title at just 15 years old and became a two-time Indian National Champion.
A Balanced Life
In an era where athletes are often pressured to build personal brands, Aravindh has chosen a different path. “I was on social media, but now I realize that it’s all a waste of time,” he laughed. “I feel much better without it. Life is more peaceful.”
Reflecting on his journey from a fatherless childhood to becoming a rising star in the chess world, Aravindh embodies the essence of patience and perseverance. His story serves as a powerful reminder that with determination and support, dreams can indeed become a reality.
