Aravindh Chithambaram: A Journey of Patience and Triumph in Chess with the Support of His Mother Deivanai
Title: Aravindh Chithambaram: From Adversity to Triumph in the Chess World
NEW DELHI: In a world where instant gratification often overshadows the value of perseverance, 26-year-old Aravindh Chithambaram stands as a beacon of hope and determination. The Grandmaster from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, recently made headlines by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the 2026 Esports Chess World Cup, set to take place in Paris from August 11 to August 15. His journey, marked by resilience and unwavering support from his family, is a testament to the age-old adage: “Patience is the key.”
Ticket to Esports World Cup 2026
After months of near misses in various tournaments, including Titled Tuesdays and elite online events, Aravindh finally clinched his spot at DreamHack Atlanta earlier this week. “I’ve been trying for many months to qualify through other tournaments,” he shared with a smile. Representing S8UL, one of India’s premier Esports organizations, Aravindh is now gearing up for the Last Chance Qualifier, where he will compete for two coveted spots in the Group Stage of the main event.
“I’m really happy that I qualified for the Esports World Cup,” he said. “Winning the tournament is an ethereal feeling. A lot of strong players took part in that event.” However, the modest Grandmaster is quick to remind fans that his journey is far from over. “I haven’t completely qualified for the group stage. I need to play one more play-in, so I’m looking forward to it. It’s just the first step, and I understand there’s a long way to go.”
A Grandfather’s Lesson
Aravindh’s journey into the world of chess began under challenging circumstances. At just three years old, he faced the tragic loss of his father, leaving his mother, Deivanai, to navigate the uncertainties of life as a single parent. “I started chess at the age of eight,” Aravindh recalled. “My grandpa told me he couldn’t play cricket, but he could teach me chess.” What began as a way to keep a young boy entertained soon blossomed into a lifelong passion.
Despite the financial challenges of raising a child alone while supporting his chess ambitions, Deivanai’s belief in her son’s talent allowed him to pursue his dreams. “I’m still in awe of my mom’s decision to let me follow this path,” Aravindh reflected. “Most parents would push their children towards academics, but she saw something in me.”
The Mentors and Sacrifices Behind Aravindh’s Rise
With a supportive family and a fierce determination, Aravindh quickly climbed the ranks in the chess world. He began competing in district tournaments and soon caught the attention of Grandmaster RB Ramesh, who became a pivotal figure in his development. “Ramesh sir has supported me since then,” Aravindh explained. “He helped me secure sponsors for international events and guided me throughout my journey.”
Under Ramesh’s mentorship, Aravindh earned his Grandmaster title in 2015 at just 15 years old, followed by back-to-back Indian National Championships in 2018 and 2019. “Initially, we focused on chess positions, but now he ensures I’m in the right mindset for every tournament,” Aravindh noted.
In an era where athletes often chase social media fame, Aravindh has chosen a different path. “I was on social media, but I realized it’s a waste of time,” he laughed. “Life feels more peaceful without it.”
Reflecting on his journey from a fatherless childhood to becoming a rising star in the chess community, Aravindh embodies the essence of patience and perseverance. With his mother, Deivanai, by his side, he continues to inspire many, proving that with determination and support, dreams can indeed become a reality.
