Viswanathan Anand Advocates Deep Understanding Over Memorization in Modern Chess

In a thought-provoking address at the inaugural session of a three-day chess workshop, five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand emphasized the importance of deep understanding in chess, particularly in an era dominated by computer-generated analysis. The workshop, organized by the Velammal Education Trust, runs from February 12 to 14 and coincides with the launch of Anand’s latest book, Lightning Kid.

Anand, reflecting on the evolution of chess in the age of engines, stated, “Funnily enough, the more that is available for you to know, the less you can know. If every day you’re subjected to 20, 30 new conclusions, how do you make sense of it? I believe that the only thing that separates chess players today is deep understanding.”

Drawing from his own experiences transitioning into the computer age, Anand highlighted that while openness to new ideas is crucial, it is the mastery of intricate details that truly elevates a player’s game. He dismissed the notion that success in modern chess hinges on rote memorization of opening lines, arguing instead that strength comes from subconscious pattern recognition developed through extensive play.

“Our brain puts together a lot more patterns than we are able to explain,” Anand remarked, noting that ideas often resurface weeks later, often without players realizing they are drawing from previous experiences. He likened chess to language acquisition, stating, “You cannot learn only from dictionaries; you learn it by speaking it.”

Anand further elaborated that theoretical preparation serves merely as a starting point—“material ingredients” before the real “cooking” begins on the board.

In addition to his insights on chess strategy, Anand expressed his support for expanding the chess ecosystem beyond Chennai, traditionally viewed as India’s chess capital, to cities like Madurai, Salem, and Coimbatore. His vision aims to cultivate a broader appreciation for the game across the country.

As the workshop unfolds, participants are set to gain invaluable insights from one of the greatest minds in chess, reinforcing Anand’s belief that understanding the game at a deeper level is essential for success in today’s competitive landscape.
