Viswanathan Anand Inspires Young Minds at Velammal Global School Chess Workshop
Madurai, February 12, 2026 — Five-time World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand captivated students and parents alike during the inauguration of a chess workshop at Velammal Global School on Thursday. Drawing parallels between chess and language, Anand emphasized the importance of regular practice and adaptability in mastering the game.
“Chess is like learning a new language. One needs to keep practicing regularly and adapt to the changes,” Anand stated, encouraging the young participants to embrace the complexities of the game. His insights resonated with the audience, highlighting the transformative power of chess in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Anand noted a significant shift in parental attitudes towards sports, recalling a time when many were hesitant to allow their children to engage in extracurricular activities due to academic pressures. “Today, parents are more supportive, recognizing that family backing can make a huge difference in a child’s performance,” he said, praising the Velammal Trust for its commitment to nurturing young talent.
The workshop aimed to cultivate future chess prodigies and expand the sport’s reach across Tamil Nadu. Anand explained that the masterclass would focus on learning through analysis, encouraging students to study games, identify patterns, and learn from their experiences. “Play the game, compare, and learn. This is how you improve,” he advised.
Chairman M.V. Muthuramalingam echoed Anand’s sentiments, stressing the vital role of sports in holistic student development. “Sports and education go hand in hand; equal importance should be given to both,” he asserted, urging parents to actively involve their children in sports and support their participation in events.
The event also featured the presentation of Anand’s book, Lightning Kid, to Muthuramalingam, further enriching the occasion. International Masters V. Saravanan and Natarajan were also in attendance, adding to the event’s prestige.
As Anand concluded his address, he expressed hope that Velammal Global School would continue to produce Grand Masters, inspiring the next generation of chess enthusiasts. With a renewed focus on sports and education, the future looks bright for aspiring chess players in Madurai.
