Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh — In a landmark event on Wednesday, Olympic medalist P.V. Sindhu and Andhra Pradesh IT & HRD Minister Nara Lokesh laid the foundation stone for the P.V. Sindhu Centre for Sports Excellence. This ambitious project aims to nurture the next generation of India’s Olympic athletes and is set to transform the landscape of sports training in the country.

Spanning nearly two lakh square feet, the centre is envisioned as an integrated sports and education ecosystem. Initially focused on badminton, the initiative has expanded into a multi-sport facility after discussions with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The centre will cater to seven disciplines: badminton, table tennis, swimming, shooting, football, basketball, and chess, with Sindhu emphasizing the importance of equal focus on all sports from the outset.

Reflecting on the project’s significance, Sindhu stated, “We put our sweat and blood into it. I can confidently tell you that it will be a world-class center, a place where people will say, ‘Wow, this is what we need in our state and in the country.’”

To ensure the centre meets global standards, Sindhu and her husband, Venkata Datta Sai, dedicated their vacations to studying leading sports facilities worldwide, visiting locations in Doha, Milan, and Australia. “I now need a holiday from all my holidays,” she joked, highlighting the extensive research that has gone into the project.

Scheduled for completion by May 2028, the facility will provide children with the opportunity to experience multiple sports before specializing, ultimately aiming to create a pathway for developing elite athletes. The centre will feature:

• Badminton: Nine international-standard courts for hosting BWF International Challenge tournaments.
• Table Tennis: Nine professional-grade tables with a dedicated performance training hall.
• Swimming: A 25-metre performance pool designed for elite training.
• Shooting: Indoor ranges at 10m and 25m for national and international competition preparation.
• Chess: A dedicated high-performance training space for advanced coaching.
• High-Performance Engine Room: An expansive 8,000 sq. ft. Strength and Conditioning Arena, one of the largest in India, equipped with sports science facilities, performance tracking, physiotherapy, and wellness areas.

Sindhu expressed her vision for the centre as a legacy that extends beyond her personal achievements. “Sport has given me so much. I want to show people that we have a lot of talent, and with world-class facilities, we can produce athletes who will bring home medals for our state and nation,” she remarked.

As the foundation stone is laid, the P.V. Sindhu Centre for Sports Excellence stands as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes across India, promising to inspire future generations and elevate the nation’s sporting prowess.
