Top Chess Stars Urge Coordination Amid Major Event Scheduling Conflicts in August
Chess Stars Unite Against Scheduling Conflicts in August
In a bold move that underscores the growing tensions within the chess community, R Praggnanandhaa, world No. 3 Fabiano Caruana, and several other elite players have penned an open letter addressing the organizers of the Esports World Cup and the Grand Chess Tour. Their message is clear: the conflicting schedules of major chess events in August must be resolved.
The Last Chance Qualifier for the Esports World Cup, which marks chess’s second appearance in the event, is set to take place from August 6 to 8, followed by the main event from August 11 to 15. Meanwhile, the Grand Chess Tour’s 11th season will kick off in May in Poland, with the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz scheduled for August 2 to 6 and the prestigious Sinquefield Cup running from August 10 to 20.
This overlap poses a significant dilemma for players, many of whom aspire to compete in both events. The open letter, which has garnered attention from the chess community, emphasizes that a solution is a “clear and immediate priority.” The players expressed their frustration over the lack of adjustments to the schedule, despite having raised the issue with organizers earlier.
“Resolving the situation is now the players’ clear and immediate priority,” the letter states. “Players and teams raised this issue with both organizers earlier and received replies, but no scheduling adjustment followed. Discussions have since stalled completely, leaving players with no visibility. With qualification paths already underway, the conflict is becoming concrete.”
The letter, shared by French Grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, highlights the urgent need for better coordination between the two major events to ensure that qualified players can participate in both. The chess community is now watching closely to see how organizers respond to this unprecedented call for action.
As the countdown to August continues, the pressure mounts on event organizers to find a resolution that respects the commitments of the players and the integrity of the sport. The chess world awaits a response, hoping for a solution that allows its stars to shine on both stages.
