“Keys to Success: Praggnanandhaa’s Mother Emphasizes Hard Work and Resilience After Historic Norway Chess Victory”
Chennai’s Rising Star: Praggnanandhaa’s Mother Shares Secrets to Success After Historic Triumph
Chennai, India – Following her son Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa’s remarkable victory at the Norway Chess 2026, his mother, Nagalakshmi, emphasized the importance of hard work, resilience, and enjoying the journey in achieving success, whether in sports or academics.
Praggnanandhaa’s triumph has solidified his position among the elite in chess, with renowned Indian Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay declaring him the strongest player in India, surpassing even reigning world champion D Gukesh and fellow Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi.
In an interview with PTI Videos, Nagalakshmi shared her insights on success, stating, “An excessive focus on results should not overshadow the effort invested in the game. If one enjoys the process and continues to work hard despite setbacks, success will eventually follow.” While acknowledging the crucial role of her son’s coaches and support staff in honing his technical skills, she highlighted her own role as a pillar of support at home.
Looking ahead, Praggnanandhaa aims to improve his live ratings in the International Chess Federation rankings following his 15-day tournament victory. Meanwhile, his sister, Grandmaster R Vaishali, is competing in the FIDE Women’s Championship in Japan, with aspirations to prepare for the World Championship title over the next six months.
Nagalakshmi dismissed any notions of sibling rivalry, emphasizing that both siblings support each other wholeheartedly in all aspects of life. Reflecting on their journey, she noted the significant influence of five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, who first met Praggnanandhaa when he was just in Class 1 at Velammal School. Anand continues to inspire both siblings, with Vaishali currently training at his academy.
The family’s journey into competitive chess began with a parental decision to limit Vaishali’s television time during her childhood. Initially enrolled in chess, drawing, and yoga classes to keep her engaged, Vaishali’s success in chess naturally led her younger brother Praggnanandhaa to take up the game, watching her practice at home. This nurturing environment has propelled both siblings to the pinnacle of international chess.
As Praggnanandhaa continues to make waves in the chess world, Nagalakshmi’s words serve as a reminder that success is not just about the accolades but also about the dedication and joy found in the pursuit of one’s passions.
