D. Gukesh Aims for Redemption at Prague International Chess Festival

Prague, Czech Republic — After a disappointing early exit from the World Cup and a lackluster performance at the Tata Steel Masters, world champion D. Gukesh is set to reclaim his form as he leads India’s charge at the Prague International Chess Festival, commencing Wednesday.

Seeded second in a competitive field, Gukesh faces a formidable challenge against top-seeded German player Vincent Keymer and Uzbek prodigy Nodirbek Abdusattorov, both of whom have been in stellar form recently. Keymer, currently ranked fourth in global live ratings, is closely followed by Abdusattorov, while Gukesh, ranked tenth, stands as the highest-rated Indian player in the tournament.

Not long ago, India boasted three players in the top ten, but recent performances have seen Arjun Erigaisi and R. Praggnanandhaa slip down the rankings, allowing Gukesh to emerge as the new Indian number one. His consistency, though not at peak levels, has kept him in the spotlight.

Joining Gukesh in the tournament is defending champion Aravindh Chithambaram, who is eager to build on his previous success at this very event, which marked a significant breakthrough in his career. Chithambaram, seeded seventh, is looking to re-enter the exclusive 2700 rating club after a subpar outing at the Tata Steel event.

The competition is fierce, with Abdusattorov riding high on his recent victory at the Tata Steel Masters, making him a crowd favorite. Keymer is expected to be a strong contender, while American player Hans Niemann, known for silencing critics, will also be a player to watch. Iranian Grandmaster Parham Maghsoodloo and Dutch competitor Jorden van Foreest round out the elite lineup, both looking to make their mark in this prestigious tournament.

Completing the ten-player roster for the nine-round Masters competition are Nodirbek Yakubboev of Uzbekistan, Spain’s David Anton Gujjaro, and local star David Navarra.

In the challengers section, Indian chess will be represented by Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Women’s World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh. Hungarian Grandmaster Benjamin Gledura leads this section as the top seed, with Denmark’s Jonas Buhl Bjerre close behind.

As the chess world turns its eyes to Prague, all eyes will be on Gukesh as he seeks to turn the tide and reclaim his status among the elite. The festival promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent and strategy, with each player vying for glory on the international stage.
