Gukesh and Chithambaram Lead Indian Charge at Prague International Chess Festival

Prague, Czech Republic – February 24, 2026

The chess world is abuzz as the Prague International Chess Festival gears up to commence on February 25, 2026. Headlining the Indian contingent are reigning World Champion D Gukesh and defending champion Aravindh Chithambaram, both set to compete in the prestigious Masters section. Meanwhile, Women’s World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh and seasoned player Surya Shekhar Ganguly will represent India in the Challengers section.

Gukesh, who has faced a challenging year, is eager to reclaim his dominance on the board. Currently ranked 10th globally, he will face stiff competition from top-seeded German player Vincent Keymer and Uzbek prodigy Nodirbek Abdusattorov, both of whom have been performing exceptionally well in recent tournaments. Keymer, ranked fourth in live ratings, is expected to be a formidable opponent, while Abdusattorov, fresh off his victory at the Tata Steel Masters, is also a strong contender for the title.

The Masters section features a competitive lineup, including American chess sensation Hans Niemann and Iranian Grandmaster Parham Maghsoodloo, both known for their tactical prowess. Chithambaram, seeded seventh, aims to bounce back from a subpar performance at the Tata event and re-enter the elite 2700 rating club.

In the Challengers section, Divya Deshmukh will lead the Indian charge alongside Ganguly. The duo faces tough competition from top seed Benjamin Gledura of Hungary and Denmark’s Jonas Buhl Bjerre.

As the festival approaches, chess enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the strategic battles that will unfold in the heart of Prague. With a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars, the event promises to deliver thrilling matches and unforgettable moments.

Stay tuned as we bring you updates from the festival, where the best of chess will be on display.
