GMs Tabatabaei, Martirosyan, and Bortnyk Triumph in Thrilling 3 0 Thursday Tournaments

April 23, 2023 – In a day filled with intense battles and unexpected twists, Grandmasters Amin Tabatabaei, Haik Martirosyan, and Oleksandr Bortnyk emerged victorious in the latest round of the 3 0 Thursday tournaments. Despite fierce competition, including standout performances from GM Jose Martinez, the trio showcased their skills and resilience to claim the top spots.

1st Tournament: Tabatabaei Takes First Title

The day kicked off with the first tournament, where Tabatabaei set the pace with an impressive score of 7.5 out of 8. However, his path to victory was not without challenges. In a pivotal moment, he faced off against Martinez, who executed a brilliant knight fork on c3, marking the only defeat for the eventual champion.

Undeterred, Tabatabaei bounced back, turning a precarious position into a stunning victory against GM Zhamsaran Tsydypov. He continued his winning streak, employing a daring opening strategy to secure a win against IM Khuong Duy Dau.

With a final score of 9.5 out of 11, Tabatabaei clinched the title, followed closely by Martinez with 9 points and Tsydypov at 8.5.

2nd Tournament: Martirosyan Escapes To Take Title

The second tournament was marked by dramatic swings and nail-biting finishes. Martirosyan started strong, racking up 7.5 points, but a potential mouse slip against GM Benjamin Bok cost him dearly. Despite this setback, Bok faltered in round 10, allowing Martirosyan a chance at redemption.

In a thrilling final round, Martirosyan found himself down several pawns against IM Alexandros Papasimakopoulos. In a remarkable comeback, he secured the win, finishing with 9 points and edging out Bok on tiebreaks. Martinez again showcased his consistency, taking third place with 8.5 points.

3rd Tournament: Bortnyk Loses Final Game, Wins Anyway

The third tournament saw Bortnyk and Martinez in a fierce contest for the title. Bortnyk initially took the lead, defeating Martinez in their head-to-head match during the fourth round. Utilizing his favorite Jobava London opening, he maintained momentum, winning convincingly against IM Roman Pyrih in round nine.

Entering the final round with a half-point lead, Bortnyk faced IM Garg Aradhya, who delivered a stunning performance to win with Black. Meanwhile, Martinez could only manage a draw against Pyrih, leaving Bortnyk with the necessary tiebreaks to secure first place with 9.5 points. Martinez finished second, while IM Renato Terry rounded out the top three with 8 points.

A Competitive Landscape

The 3 0 Thursday tournaments continue to attract top-tier talent, offering a platform for verified titled players to showcase their skills in a fast-paced format. With a combined prize fund of $3,000 each week, the stakes are high, and the competition fierce.

As the chess community eagerly anticipates the next round of tournaments, one thing is clear: the battle for supremacy in the 3 0 Thursday series is far from over.
