Team USA Leads at 2026 World Senior Team Chess Championship in Albania

Durres, Albania – As the 2026 World Senior Team Chess Championship unfolds, Team USA has emerged as a formidable contender in the 50+ section, currently sharing the lead with Italy after five rounds of intense competition. The championship, taking place from April 19 to 28, has seen the Americans score an impressive 4½ out of 5 points, setting the stage for a thrilling pursuit of their fourth consecutive title.

The USA Women’s team, while not leading, is still in the mix with a score of 2½ out of 5, trailing closely behind the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan. A total of 36 teams, including four women’s teams, are vying for glory in this prestigious event.

Play resumes on Saturday, April 25, with Round 6 of the nine-round tournament. Fans can catch the action live starting at 8:15 a.m. CDT on platforms like Lichess and Chess.com.

A Strong Start for Team USA

Team USA has opted to retain its championship-winning roster from last year, featuring Grandmasters Jaan Ehlvest, Alexander Shabalov, Gregory Kaidanov, and Igor Novikov on Boards 1-4, with International Master Stuart Rachels as the alternate. The team kicked off the tournament with a stellar 3-0 start, securing victories against the Philidor Brothers from France, England-2, and North Macedonia’s Alkaloid Chess Club.

In a particularly noteworthy match against Alkaloid, the Americans faced their first grandmaster opposition but emerged victorious with a 3-1 score, thanks to standout performances from Ehlvest and Rachels. Ehlvest’s game featured an exciting rook sacrifice that showcased his tactical prowess.

The fourth round saw Team USA face Italy, where all games ended in draws. Despite missed opportunities for the players with white pieces, the team’s cautious approach kept them in a strong position heading into the final rounds.

In Round 5, Team USA faced a tough England-1 team, featuring renowned Grandmaster Michael Adams. Ehlvest and Shabalov both drew their games, putting the pressure on the bottom boards. Kaidanov clinched a crucial victory, while Novikov managed to hold a challenging endgame against Emms, securing a 2½–1½ win for the Americans.

USA Women’s Team Fights Back

The USA Women’s team, featuring four returning players from last year’s bronze-winning squad, including WGM Anjelina Belakovskaia and reigning U.S. Senior Women’s champion WFM Natalia Tsodikova, has shown resilience despite facing tough competition. After a strong 3-1 victory over England-5, they encountered challenges against Hungary and Kazakhstan, but managed to draw against England Women in Round 4.

With their sights set on improvement, the USA Women’s team is eager to make a mark in the remaining rounds.

Looking Ahead

As the championship progresses, Team USA and Team USA Women are determined to showcase their skills and strategy on the international stage. With three additional American teams competing, including the Jhunjhnuwala brothers in the 50+ section and two teams in the 65+ section, the U.S. presence is strong.
