Young Talent Triumphs: Faustino Oro Claims Victory in April 17 Freestyle Friday Chess Tournament
12-Year-Old Chess Prodigy Faustino Oro Claims Victory in Freestyle Friday
April 17, 2025 — In a stunning display of skill and strategy, 12-year-old International Master Faustino Oro emerged victorious in the highly competitive Freestyle Friday tournament, held on April 17. Oro’s triumph marks his first-ever win in the tournament, propelling him into the top 10 of the Freestyle Friday Championship leaderboard.
Entering the final round as one of three co-leaders, Oro was the only player to secure a win, defeating GM S Rohith Krishna and solidifying his place at the top with a score of 9.5 points. GM Pranav Venkatesh finished in second place with 9 points, while IM Sahib Singh and Rohith tied for third and fourth with 8.5 points each after tiebreaks.
The tournament kicked off with four players maintaining perfect scores, including Oro, Rohith, Singh, and GM Jules Moussard. The competition heated up as Singh pulled off a surprising victory against last week’s champion, GM Parham Maghsoodloo, setting the stage for an intense battle.
Rohith, who started the tournament with an impressive 8/8, faced Oro in a pivotal match. Despite a strong start, Rohith’s position deteriorated when he hung a rook, allowing Oro to seize the opportunity and clinch the game. This victory not only boosted Oro’s confidence but also put him in contention for the title.
As the rounds progressed, the tension mounted. Rohith faced GM Sina Movahed, a five-time Freestyle Friday champion, and managed to secure a win, maintaining his lead. However, Oro’s consistent performance saw him inch closer to the top, ultimately tying for first place after a series of decisive victories.
In the final rounds, Oro faced GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son in a nail-biting endgame. Demonstrating remarkable composure, Oro centralized his king and methodically dismantled Nguyen’s defenses, securing his victory and the tournament title.
Oro’s win not only earned him a cash prize of $400 but also established him as a formidable player in the chess community. GM Humpy Koneru took home the women’s prize, making Oro the only non-Indian player to earn a cash prize in this tournament.
As the chess world watches this young talent, Oro’s victory serves as a reminder of the potential that lies within the next generation of chess players. With his sights set on future competitions, the chess community eagerly anticipates what this prodigy will achieve next.
