Candidates Tournament Set to Begin in Cyprus Amid Security Concerns
NICOSIA, Cyprus — The highly anticipated Candidates tournament, which will determine the challengers for the world chess titles in both the open and women’s sections, is set to kick off on March 28, despite rising security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
FIDE, the global governing body of chess, has sought to reassure participants and fans alike that Cyprus remains a safe destination for visitors. The tournament will run until April 16, with the winners earning the right to challenge the reigning world champions in their respective categories.
However, the event has not been without controversy. Indian chess veteran Koneru Humpy has withdrawn from the tournament, citing security risks, while American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura has raised alarms regarding potential power outages on the island.
FIDE Addresses Concerns
In response to Nakamura’s comments on social media platform X, FIDE has emphasized that power conditions in Cyprus are generally stable, with backup generators in place at the tournament venue, the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort. “Power shortages in Cyprus are very rare and typically short-lived,” FIDE stated, referencing a recent incident where outages lasted only minutes.
FIDE’s commitment to safety extends beyond power supply. The organization has reiterated that Cyprus is a secure location for international events, despite earlier missile strikes on a military base on the island. “Cyprus is a safe country to travel. There is no emergency situation, and the country continues to operate normally,” FIDE assured.
Contingency Plans in Place
To further alleviate concerns, FIDE has outlined comprehensive contingency plans, stating, “We remain ready to respond promptly to any changes in circumstances, with the safety and comfort of players, officials, media, and guests as the top priority.” The hotel hosting the tournament is equipped with shelter facilities, ensuring that all participants have access to safety measures if needed.
As the chess community gears up for this prestigious event, the focus will remain on the board, where the world’s best players will compete for the chance to challenge for the ultimate titles in chess. With FIDE’s assurances and preparations in place, the Candidates tournament promises to be a thrilling showcase of skill and strategy, even amidst the backdrop of geopolitical tensions.
As the clock ticks down to the opening move, all eyes will be on Cyprus, where the future of chess champions will be decided.
