Reviving the Game: Columbus Chess Academy Expands Opportunities for Students in Local Schools
Columbus Chess Academy Revives Game in Local Schools, Fostering Skills Beyond the Board
COLUMBUS, Ohio — At East High School, a simple table transforms into a battlefield of wits as students engage in spirited chess matches, a sight that is becoming increasingly common across Columbus. The Columbus Chess Academy, which has seen remarkable growth since its inception, is on a mission to reignite the passion for chess in local schools.
From Two to Twenty-Three: A Chess Renaissance
Founded in 2021, the Columbus Chess Academy began with just two schools. Fast forward to today, and the academy now boasts coaches in 23 schools, with more institutions eager to join the movement. Executive Director Kathy Lin notes that chess was once a staple in Columbus schools during the late 90s and early 2000s, but many programs dwindled after city funding was cut. However, recent trends indicate a resurgence of interest in the game.
“The popularity of chess has been rekindled, partly due to the success of The Queen’s Gambit and the surge of online play during the pandemic,” Lin explained. “Students are eager to learn and engage with this timeless game.”
Building Skills for Life
For senior A’Lonte Ulmer, chess was not initially on his radar. “I just sat down and started playing. I was drawn to it,” he shared. Now, he recognizes the profound impact the game has had on his thinking. “It’s teaching me strategy, patience, and how to think ahead,” Ulmer said.
His coach, Angela Marshall, emphasizes the importance of confidence in chess. “You need to play with confidence and not fear challenges. Every match is a learning experience,” she said, highlighting the personal growth she witnesses in her students.
Lin echoes this sentiment, noting that chess is more than just a game; it cultivates critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for future careers. “As central Ohio grows with new developments, students will need these skills to navigate challenges in any job,” she stated.
A Community of Learners
The academy’s approach goes beyond teaching chess strategies; it aims to build community within schools. By partnering with teachers and administrators, the Columbus Chess Academy provides resources and coaches to foster a love for the game among students.
For Ulmer, chess is not solely about winning trophies. “It’s a great feeling, but it’s also a learning experience, whether you win or lose,” he said, reflecting on the deeper lessons the game imparts.
As the Columbus Chess Academy continues to expand its reach, it is clear that the game of chess is more than just a pastime; it is a powerful tool for personal development and community building, preparing students for the challenges of tomorrow.
