Fabiano Caruana and Carissa Yip Repeat as U.S. Chess Champions
In a thrilling final round of the U.S. Chess Championships, GM Fabiano Caruana and IM Carissa Yip emerged victorious, repeating as champions in their respective categories. Caruana secured his third consecutive victory (fourth overall) with a 7/10 score, while Yip claimed her third title in four years with an impressive 8½/11 score.
Yip dominated the Women’s Championship with an 8/8 start, establishing a significant lead over the field. However, consecutive losses allowed IM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova to close the gap to just one point, securing clear second place with a 7½/11 score. Despite a six-way tie for second place in the Open Championship, Caruana’s margin of victory was larger than Yip’s, showcasing his dominance in the tournament.
In a heartwarming moment, Yip fulfilled a promise to her opponent Alice Lee by treating her to ice cream after their game. The camaraderie between rivals off the board added a special touch to the competition.
Tokhirjonova’s strong performance earned her a third Silver at the U.S. Women’s Champs and a spot in the Women’s World Cup. She finished ahead of Lee, who despite a head-to-head loss, secured third place in the tournament.
FM Megan Lee also had a standout performance, finishing in clear fourth place and earning $13,000 for her efforts. The competition was fierce, with players showcasing their skills and determination throughout the event.
In the Open Championship, Caruana’s final-round victory over GM Sam Shankland secured his title as U.S. Champion. Despite Shankland’s strong play, Caruana’s strategic moves and determination earned him the $55,000 first prize.
The tournament featured intense battles and surprising outcomes, with players showcasing their tactical prowess and competitive spirit. The U.S. Chess Championships once again highlighted the talent and dedication of the participants, solidifying their places in the chess world.
Congratulations to Fabiano Caruana, Carissa Yip, and all the participants for their impressive performances in the 2024 U.S. Chess Championships.
